Windows 8 and USB driver installation

Postby alan » Sat Dec 07, 2013 6:45 pm

So your first Firewing main board has just arrived, you've already installed the compiler, and now you need to install the USB driver so you can talk to your new toy. But wait a minute, you're running Windows 8, and when you try to install the driver, Windows just refuses because the driver is unsigned ... and it doesn't even ask you if it would be OK to continue. You have no option but to abort and sob quietly in the corner.

There is a way to temporarily disable this 'security feature' of Win 8 ... make your own search or follow this link ( which worked for me ).

Perhaps this could be explained on the main site or in a downloadable PDF with screenshots ? I couldn't see it anywhere on the main site ...

I'm really sorry you had problems Alan. I have not got windows 8 so was unable to provide the necessary instructions.

Yes, I think you are right. It would be nice if someone didn't have to go through your experience. Would it be possible for you to create the necessary screenshots for windows 8 in the style of:

http://www.firewing.info/pmwiki.php?n=Firewing.DriverWin7

Word format or something would be fine (unless you feel confident of adding to the wiki yourself, instructions here http://www.firewing.info/pmwiki.php?n=FirewingUser.FirewingUser)

If you could do this, I could send you some prototyping boards and stackable header kits (http://www.mecanique.co.uk/shop/index.php?route=product/product&path=72_77&product_id=70)free of charge for your trouble. Could you help out?

Hi David,

Wiki page creation is too scary - tried to attach a draft document here with pictures, but the 256k file upload limit tripped me up. Tried to split it into several zipped files, but the 'three file limit' tripped me up. Since you're the admin here, can you look up my email from my registration details, ping me yours and I'll reply with the complete doc attached ? I don't think I can do it any other way, can I ? It's getting late, so may not be until tomorrow evening now.

Don't worry about prototyping boards etc., maybe you could drop a quid or two in a charity tin on my behalf ?
