new PIC32MX

General questions about Firewing...

new PIC32MX

Postby richardb » Mon Dec 02, 2013 7:47 am

I just noticed this new part(pic32MX 330DMIPS @200MHz) in my electronics mag. and wondered if it would ever be supported in firewing.

Firewing can hook into the Microchip 32 compiler to generate a hex file, so I don't see why not in principle. The only issue I see at the moment is that Firewing can only handle a 16 bit RAM address space.

I should add, if anyone wants to work with me on building a version of Firewing that will work with these devices, then just get in touch...

I would be interested, but I'll be honest in that I haven't even looked at whether there is a firewing (pin/voltage) compatible part.

I'd be happy to design a board and make the design available, but id also prefer one with more I/o.

I've made the changes to the 32 bit compiler and it now should work fine with RAM > 64K. I'm going to try it out with a chipKIT Max32

http://www.digilentinc.com/Products/Detail.cfm?NavPath=2,892,894&Prod=CHIPKIT-MAX32

This uses a PIC32MX795F512 and has 512K of flash program memory and 128K of RAM - I think this would be a good unit to test against?

That seems like a reasonable choice to me.

oops a bit of a typo on my part. looks like it's the pic32MZ that runs at 200MHz

Yeah, figured that was the case.

I haven't been following the 32MZ announcements, but from what little I've read I don't think they can just drop into a 32MX design.

Hi David,

Had to leave pics for a while for other things, but finally managed to resurface!
I have successfully run the R2 mainboard with a PIC32MX250F128B (PDIP) under MPLAB and C compiler. Do I understand that the Firewing compiler can now compile for 32 bit directly? If not , when is it likely to be available?

I have a MAX32 board and would like to use this with Firewing as well, and eventually move to the Pic32MZ on the same project.
